According to a press release issued by the city, Mayor Edwards cited a number of reasons for issuing the veto including the overwhelming response by citizens and the financial impact of changing the name. He also offered that there were no significant timing issues prompting the city to move forward with changing the name. “Finally, at this time, we have more urgent issues to deal with in order to set this city on a strong foundation to move forward,” the city’s press release read. “The naming of the City can be accomplished at any time. Remember, the City of Atlanta had other names before the name Atlanta was accepted. As of this veto, we will revert back to our original name, the City of South Fulton.” Pursuant to Section 3.21. Submissions of ordinances to the Mayor, attached is a copy of the Mayor’s Veto of Ordinance 2017-037, a Charter Amendment Changing the Name of the City to the City of Renaissance. An ordinance vetoed by the mayor shall automatically be on the agenda at the next regular meeting of the city council for reconsideration, in this case Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
